On May 5, 2019 Dr Werts was an honored recipient of an Appreciation Award by Los Angeles Christian Health Centers for his volunteer dental services over the last 11 years. This is a monthly routine where one day a month is given to help treat the homeless and less fortunate in whatever care they need.
The first several years were spent at Joshua House which serves the Skid Row community. At that time all the treating dentists were volunteer basis. In the years since funding has been provided and regular staff dentists have been employed. Dr Werts, however, remains as the last volunteer dentist to serve there. In 2014 a new satellite clinic at Pico Aliso was opened serving the East LA Hispanic community and this is the current volunteer site. Opening in 2020, a completely new clinic will be completed will be completed greatly expanding the services that can be rendered.
It is the philosophy of caring that continues to attract Dr Werts to remain part of this community.
In addition to the comprehensive healthcare patients find at LACHC clinics, they also receive kindness and compassion, a respite from the isolation of homelessness. There patients are treated judgement free with open hearts receiving the dignity everyone deserves.
