Platelet Rich Plasma / Platelet Rich Fibrin
Our office now utilizes Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) / Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) for many implant, oral surgery, and periodontal procedures. Utilizing a small sample of the patient’s own blood, this therapy can enhance hard and soft tissue grafting procedures. Not only does the treatment reduce healing times, but it also decreases pain and swelling and improves overall patient experience.
This innovative technology has been used in dentistry for over ten years with much success. Platelet rich fibrin treatments have been used in areas other than dentistry as well. The treatments have received significant press in the sports medicine field, but are also prevalent in other parts of the medical world. Platelet rich fibrin treatment has been widely used in heart surgery, orthopedics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery and dermatology.
A second-generation form of blood-derived growth factor technology, Platelet Rich Fibrin involves the creation of a thin, durable layer of platelet-rich fibrin. The proteins in the fibrin encourage swifter healing and wound closing and reduce the likelihood of infection. They are also particularly helpful in cases of multiple recession defects.
PRP / PRF has a number of applications for periodontal and oral surgery including bone defects, extractions, sinus lifts, gum grafts and more.
Platelet Rich Fibrin Treatment
The PRP / PRF treatment is used for oral surgery procedures like gum grafts or extractions. Prior to oral surgery, a patient will have his blood drawn and placed in a centrifuge that will separate the blood into three individual components: plasma, red blood cells and a small amount of white blood cells and platelets. The white blood cells and platelets are called the “buffy coat,” which will turn into the platelet rich fibrin. This product is also used during oral surgery to improve a patient’s healing process. We take the Advanced-Platelet Rich Fibrin, processed by the patient’s own blood, and immediately place it into the surgical site. After the procedure, the patient will leave the office with increased rejuvenation abilities in the area where the PRP/PRF treatments can enhance the success rate of many oral surgery procedures. Every patient’s product of platelet rich fibrin is processed from his own blood, and there are scientifically proven benefits such as increased healing abilities.
After centrifugation, the platelet releases specific growth factors, including transforming growth factor beta (TGF-B), platelet derived growth factor (PDGF), vaso-endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and epithelial growth factor (EGF). Each of these factors plays a specific role in new vascularization (formation of blood vessels) and hard and soft tissue healing. Since patients heal faster, they enjoy a smaller chance of infection, dry socket, failed grafting or failed implants.
Benefits of PRP / PRF:
- Easy, safe, affordable procedure
- Utilizes patient’s own blood
- Improves wound healing
- Reduces pain and infection
