Topic: Humanitarian Dentistry
Dr Koerner, from Draper, Utah, has been going to China annually for many years. He is fluent in Mandarin and has developed a network of clinics that strive to have him and his team revisit.
In April 2012, Dr. Werts joined Dr. Koerner, a group of doctors, nurses, hygienists, and support staff to visit Suqian, Jiangsu Province, China, on a dental humanitarian trip. Our goal was to serve the needy – the poor, the orphaned, and the elderly. The trip was as much human outreach as clinical care. Besides the clinical care, we visited special needs schools providing donations, gifts and toys. Trips such as these allow us to see the world through a different lens while we share the gift of our skills with those less fortunate. This month’s presentation is about these experiences and the resulting rewards.
Dr. Koerner is sought after as a speaker for dental groups, having taught over 800 times at such meetings as the American Dental Association Annual Session, Greater New York, the prestigious Hinman Meeting in Atlanta, the Yankee Meeting in Boston, and California Dental Association Meetings in San Francisco and Anaheim. He has also taught in many foreign countries in Europe, South and Central America, India, and Asia.
